Fringe 2010 Street Performers

This year almost 2 million people visited shows at the Edinburgh Fringe.

However, spending time at the Fringe doesn’t mean spending a lot of money.

If you’re visiting on a shoestring budget make the most of the free shows and street performers.

Every day along the mile there is a fantastic spectacle of entertainment where you never know if the person next to you is a performer or a spectator.

This year I saw sword jugglers, escape artists, amusing but talented acoustic acts, dancers, hundreds of people promoting shows and very talented singers on every part of the Royal Mile.

Each day I spent in Edinburgh I could easily have spent at least a few hours on the mile. With acts changing approximately every 20 minutes, by the time you walked up the mile, you could come back down and see different acts.

If you visit the Fringe next year I recommend spending time there as it helps when deciding which shows to spend your money on.

The highlights for me were:

The Martians – a Scottish comedy band who do some great renditions of favourite songs with some improv thrown in and a lot of audience interaction.

Zambezi Express – Zimbabwean performers promoting their musical with African song and dance, bright orange t-shirts and massive smiles.

Sector 17 – A new musical written by two very talented 19 year old young men and performed by a talented young cast from Redditch.

Have a look at the video below to see just a small selection of the entertainment to be found for free on the mile.

Next year the Fringe takes place from 5-29 August. See you there?
